Confluence is getting a fresh new look and navigation

We’re in the process of rolling out these changes and the documentation may not match your experience. Bear with us while we update it to reflect the new changes. More about navigating the new Confluence

How to use the new toolbar and insert elements

You can choose where your formatting toolbar appears:

  • Pinned at the top, or

  • Unpinned, appearing in-line when you select text.

The default setting is pinned for Pages and unpinned for Live Docs.

If you change this, your preference will be saved for both content types.

We're iterating the toolbar and formatting experience with features subject to change.

Your previous browser tabs may show an earlier experience. Refresh your page to receive the latest available experience for your account.

This page outlines updates in the latest release. It may take a few months to land in your site, or to be accurately reflected across our documentation.

What to expect

  • Select the pin or unpinned icon to the right of the toolbar

  • Access Undo, Redo, and Find and replace next to the top-right Share button, via the ... menu.

  • Improved access elements like tables, media, and the date by clicking the + button when you hover on any content block, or type / anywhere.

Share your feedback with our team

Send us feedback about these changes via in-product help.

  1. Select the icon at the bottom left of your content.

  2. Select Editor as the component in the feedback modal.

  3. Submit your feedback, providing as much detail as possible.

Pin or unpin your toolbar

Select the pin icon from the toolbar menu to pin or unpin your toolbar.

For both toolbar experiences your preference saves in Confluence.

  • If you use multiple Confluence sites, you’ll need to choose your toolbar preference for each one.

  • Your teammates can choose their own preferences which will save for them.

Pinned top toolbar

Fixed at the top is how the toolbar has traditionally appeared in Confluence. When you fix your toolbar at the top, more elements such as media, tables, and emojis will appear.

In-line toolbar, appears when you select text

For a more minimalist feel you can let it appear in-line when you select text. The in-line toolbar lets the formatting tools come to you, rather than having to scroll or move to the top of the page.

To select text:

  • Drag your cursor over words

  • Select the drag and drop handle. This will highlight text within a content block.

  • Use keyboard shortcuts:

    • Mac Command + Shift + Left/Right arrow

    • Windows Ctrl + Shift + Left/Right arrow

The unpinned toolbar aims to reduce visual clutter for customers who prefer to search for and insert elements with the keyboard / command.

Insert elements: tables, the date, and more

Elements include tables, layouts, media, checkboxes and more.

Search for or insert elements by:

  • Typing the forward slash key “/” anywhere on the page

  • Selecting the + button that appears when you’re hovering over a content block

Start typing to search for what you’re looking for.

When you select ...View more in the + or / menu, the element browser will pop-up. You can browse all elements and macros such as tables, charts, the date, and more.
