We're updating our terminology in Jira

'Issue' is changing to 'work item'. You might notice some inconsistencies while this big change takes place.

Enforce an approval step for change reviews

The change management workflow is available in all company-managed projects created using the IT service management project template. The workflow includes two review stages:

  • Change manager or peer review

  • Change advisory board (CAB) review.

By default, the change management workflow doesn't force approvals for these steps. Any agent or admin has the permission to transition a work item through a review.

You can, however, enforce strict approvals making it mandatory to be reviewed by one or more specific team members.

To enforce an approval step for change reviews:

  1. From your service project, select Project settings > Workflows.

  2. In the Actions column for the workflow Change Management workflow for Jira Service Management select Edit workflow.

  3. Select the status to which you want to add the approval step.

  4. Select the Include approval step checkbox.

  5. Make your selection for the fields within Number of approvers and Approver source then select Next.

  6. Make your selection for the fields Select transition if approved, Select transition if declined, and Exclude approvers from, then select Add.

  7. At the top of the page, select Publish draft.

  8. Choose whether or not to save a backup copy of the new workflow.

  9. Select Publish.
